- Volquez is still recovering from Tommy John Surgery - He's still less than 100 innings removed from it. It took Francisco Liriano longer to recover from his surgery.
- He has trouble focusing while on the mound.
- He tries to strike out every hitter.
- Josh Hamilton's MVP year put too much pressure on him.
- He has a bad attitude. Volquez is immature. His posture on the hill gives the impression that he doesn't care.
- He needs more run support.
- Volquez stopped taking performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) - He got busted for it in 2010.
- He is who he is. His dominant first half of the 2008 season was a fluke that sometimes happens when a pitcher switches leagues. His technique is to throw the ball and it goes wherever it goes. Since the hitters all know this, they just wait on a certain pitch, knowing he can't throw strikes consistently.
- Horrible mechanics - Volquez has never been able to find a consistent release point. His delivery has changed a lot since 2008. Command is everything for a big league pitcher.
- He is ticked off at his decision to turn down close to a $30 million dollar contract.
