Cincinnati Reds: Ten Reasons why Edinson Volquez has struggled

  1. Volquez is still recovering from Tommy John Surgery - He's still less than 100 innings removed from it. It took Francisco Liriano longer to recover from his surgery.
  2. He has trouble focusing while on the mound.
  3. He tries to strike out every hitter.
  4. Josh Hamilton's MVP year put too much pressure on him.
  5. He has a bad attitude. Volquez is immature. His posture on the hill gives the impression that he doesn't care.
  6. He needs more run support.
  7. Volquez stopped taking performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) - He got busted for it in 2010.
  8. He is who he is. His dominant first half of the 2008 season was a fluke that sometimes happens when a pitcher switches leagues. His technique is to throw the ball and it goes wherever it goes. Since the hitters all know this, they just wait on a certain pitch, knowing he can't throw strikes consistently.
  9. Horrible mechanics - Volquez has never been able to find a consistent release point. His delivery has changed a lot since 2008. Command is everything for a big league pitcher.
  10. He is ticked off at his decision to turn down close to a $30 million dollar contract.
